Wheel thrown stoneware fossil bowl with pewter foot by Lorraine Bates.
White stoneware bowl with Silurian fossil sprigs.
Titanium glaze and oxides of cobalt, copper and manganese.
The Silurian fossils used are collected from the Black Country UNESCO Geopark a few metres from Woodsetton Art Pottery near Dudley, and the glazes are formulated from locally collected minerals. included a ghost image of a “Dudley Bug” Calymene Blumenbachii.
The potter comes from a family of pewter smiths and also makes the metal components used for the essential good functioning of the piece.
Engraved and dated with the studio ceramic mark and Birmingham pewter mark.
