Patrick O'Donohue makes wheel thrown and handmade ceramics influenced by studies and perceptions of natural landscape and the elements. His thrown works explore simple forms and abstract painted surfaces whereas the hand built pieces interpret more direct sketches of landscape, observed shapes, textures and representational mark making techniques. The use of colour is minimal and considered, influenced by drawings using graphite or Indian ink. Patrick appreciates the subtleties of monotone and the dramatic contrast of black and white and exploits the rich qualities of ceramic media to create painterly and textural surfaces. Works are fired to around 1120 degrees, often with multiple firings to build a surface using slips, engobes, underglaze paints oxides and glazes.
